Orangeman Burns - Sriram Sridharan's Blog

This is a blog about me, myself and things that happen around me. Visit sriraminhell for fun games, cool streaming songs and wicked reviews.. My main blogging interests include DIY electronic projects, hardware hacking, micro controller programming, GSM communication, travel photos, tech news and recipes. As you can see, my interests are varied and I strive not categorize my blog into a particular niche.

Since the new upgrade for Ubuntu's Hardy Heron [8.04] came out on 30th, I wanted to install the Intrepid Ibex [8.10] upgrade. Today I started the Update Manager and let it upgrade to 8.10. Downloading the Binaries took 5-odd hours[I'm on a 384Kbps connection and the download size is just a mite less than 1GB]. It took an hour to install and asked to reboot. This is where the troubles started. After rebooting, it went to the beige screen that precedes the splash screen and then to a black blank screen. I could move around the mouse and that was it.

Frustrated, I tried the earlier builds:
Kernel 2.6.24-21
Kernel 2.6.22-14
Kernel 2.6.20.16

None worked. I didn't see an option to downgrade back to 8.04 and I'm not really a fan of terminal. I could not even shutdown. I had to manually power off the UPS, and power it back on the old fashioned way. I booted back into Windows XP [That's where I am, as I'm typing this]. I found a couple of kindred souls on the Ubuntu forums. Apparently the compiz [which is responsible for the visual effects] module has problems with older Intel graphics cards [I have a on-board graphics module aboard my Intel 845 GVSR]. A suggested work around was to boot into recovery mode and remove the compiz module. Apparently the bus has been around for a couple of months now[Launchpad Bug #259385].

Suggested workaround:

select root shell prompt
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
exit
resume

I am going to try is work around now.. Will post back to see if it worked or not. Wish me luck!! If you guys have any tips/remedies on getting around this bug, don't forget to comment.

Edit: Ok guys!! I can confirm that the above hack works for me. After removing the compiz packages, Ubuntu 8.10 booted up properly and I'm using it to post this message. Do tell me about your experiences in the comments.

@ Nagendra Reddy and Jamie, Glad to see it works for you guys. I did see another hack involving adding VESA in the XORG.conf file. I don't remember where though.

@Anon, Hope this fix works for you. Cheers!!

BTW, I haven't been able to change the Visual Effects from none. I assume that this is caused by my removal of the compiz packages. I'll enable it back via Synaptic once the bugs are ironed out!!

Mine is pre-configured to vesa with compiz effect dissabled but the window are very flickery with this vesa. How about your screen

@Anonymous, When I first upgraded to version 8.10, the screen was pretty flickery. This was because the refresh rate was set to 60Hz. I changed it to 80Hz[Max for the native resolution on my CRT] and I have no problems now.

This worked for me, too. Thanks so much for posting this! It was nice to find something that didn't involve trying to find a non-existent xorg.conf file in my /etc/ directory. :)

Try control-alt-F1 to get a text console.
After logging in, sudo -s to become root.
After that, envyng -t and install appropriate video driver and say "Thank you Alberto Milone!" and send him a few bucks.
Of course assuming you already did apt-get install envyng.

If this doesn't work for you, try this:

"– POTENTIAL BLANK SCREEN AFTER LOGIN FIX –
If you upgraded or installed Ubuntu 8.10 and you get a black/blank screen after you login, or if you change your resolution and you get a black screen, then try this:
If you haven’t already tried logging into FailSafe Gnome, click options in the bottom left, then Session, then select Failsafe Gnome.
If that didn’t work, and you haven’t already removed compiz, boot into recovery and go into a shell (or ctrl+alt+f1 if you’re at the login), type:
sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core
If that didn’t work or you haven’t already tried xfix, then boot into recovery mode and a menu will come up. Select the last option, xfix. Alternatively, you can type:
sudo dpkg-recofigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Finally, if all that didn’t work, try simply deleting your ~/.config/ directory:
sudo rm -rf ~/.config

That last one finally worked for me! I was so happy!
Any questions, just email me: Dremth@gmail.com"
