At first glance, infrared saunas may look very similar to rock saunas, as they are usually contained in a small wooden room or enclosure to simulate the feel of a traditional sauna. However, with an infrared heated sauna, a special infrared heater is used to convey far infrared heat waves directly to the body through a process called conversion, where traditional saunas heat the air first. Infrared home saunas don’t need to generate the same high temperatures as rock saunas, usually topping out at 130°F. Due to their lower temperatures, infrared saunas can be used for longer sessions than traditional saunas.
Hi,
Thanks for all the information. I use biomat regularly. Just a 20 minutes nap on it reduces the stress and relaxes our body. The far infrared rays helps us to detoxify our body which removes all the toxins and helps us to be healthy.
Readers planning to buy a sauna should beware of the so-called infrared saunas, most of which are made in the PRC (China) from inferior materials. These are not genuine saunas in the Scandinavian style.
In the traditional heater, the heating elements heat the air and a mass of stones. This allows for a consistent heat and the custom of sprinkling water on the stones, which changes the environment in the sauna dramatically.
The infrared heaters have exposed heating elements, so that the heat radiates directly onto the bather in sort of a one sided fashion. These infrared heaters have a much lower capacity, so the most common complaint is that they fail to attain the heat typical for a genuine sauna, especially on the part of the body turned away from the heater.
You also sacrifice the ability to sprinkle water on the heater, and one must question whether it’s actually healthy to expose one’s self to such direct radiation, or how enjoyable such an experience is, compared to the traditional sauna.
In contrast, the traditional Scandinavian style saunas are centuries old (they were heated with wood before electricity), and their safety and therapeutic efficacy is well established.
As with tainted toothpaste, poisonous pet food and lead painted children’s toys, some of these infrared saunas are downright hazardous at least according to the Electrical Safety Authority in Ontario, Canada. See…

I think you are mixing up far too many unrelated points. Is your statement that products from china are poor quality, or that infrared is somehow unhealthy?
You refer to infrared as "radiation", which has negative connotations, but not all radiation is bad. The therapeutic benefits of infrared heat have been used for some time now. Many companies, like the one at www.czinfraredheaters.com, use infrared heat in portable applications. Sure, you can say "one must question", but when the answers are already available, why omit them?
Of course these saunas do not heat up to the traditional sauna temperatures, that's the point. If a traditional sauna is what you're looking for, then you will obviously not buy a non-traditional sauna.
As with any product, there are poorly made versions. That does not mean the typical stereotypes (Chinese manufacturing, for example) should be applied to all similar products sold. Simply shop around and find one that meets your quality standards.

The problem here is that people are marketing these infrared saunas as typical saunas, which they are not. Many people who buy an infrared sauna come away disappointed with their purchase because they're looking for something they can never get from this type of device. Not to mention that many (of course not all) of these so called "saunas" are indeed dangerous, which was again made obvious when Sauna by Airwall, Inc had to recall their infrared saunas due to faulty heating units and fuses.

Many of these infrared sauna manufacturers and distributors are making unbelievable claims about their products - I just want to make sure people make an informed purchase.
